Main House: 3 bedrooms /2.5 bath
Guest House: 2 bedrooms / 2 bath

The Fish Creek Compound is located on a five-acre site located five miles north of Wilson and was designed by John Carney, FAIA. This residential compound sensitively responds to the setting: a forested site that looks toward the Snake River Ranch to the east and towering peaks to the west. Consisting of a main home and a guest house, the compound provides privacy and an intimate connection to nature. The gently sloping, forested site features a seasonal stream and clear views of the Sleeping Indian to the east. As one approaches this unique property, they will be struck by the expansive views of the mountains yet also the privacy and seclusion making it feel like a private resort.
The architect and his wife were able to study the property over  the course of a two-year period, first building a 990 square-foot guest house, where they lived for three years prior to building the main house. During this period, the couple observed their surroundings until they felt they could complete the master plan with a main house that would take full advantage of the site’s seasonal stream, mixed pine and aspen forest, and dramatic views. The resulting design for the main house reconciles the property’s natural slope with its view to the Sleeping Indian and provides a livable, right-sized residence where guests can comfortably host family and friends. This home strikes a balance between shelter and views, offering feelings of protection and a deep connection to nature. The design considered every detail, leaving occupants with the feeling of residing in nature, but with the conveniences and amenities of a five star hotel. This one of a kind offering is a must see.

The main house was built where it is afforded commanding views of the valley and mountains. Encompassing 4,300 square feet, the house is oriented along a roughly north-south axis and consists of rectilinear volumes topped with overhanging shed roofs. The two-story home is tucked into the hillside and follows the contours of the site. The base is made of board-formed concrete, while the upper walls are clad in the same cedar shingles and bonderized steel as the guest house. In order to take full advantage of the site amenities while keeping a low profile, the main house is entered from the upper level.  Running alongside the garage is a covered pathway, which leads to a terrace and the front door. One steps into an open-plan kitchen and great room, where floor-to-ceiling glass provides a strong connection to the outdoors.

Upon entering the home, guests are transported by generations of collected antiques mixed with modern pieces, each purposely placed and curated. Sitting on the Bensen sectional sofa, nestled in front of the floor to ceiling windows and a wood burning fireplace, one could be overwhelmed while taking in the beauty both indoors and out.  The open living area with floor to ceiling windows and a grand piano create the perfect backdrop for family living and entertaining and also provides a front row seat for observing the abundant wildlife including  moose, elk, deer, foxes, and occasional black bears that move through the property and swim in the small pond.

The property sleeps 6-8 in the main house and 4-5 in the guest house. The outdoor deck spaces are designed to capture the inspirational views creating the perfect space to enjoy a morning cup of coffee or share stories over a glass of wine about the daily adventure. At the main house, an outdoor dining area features a table that will seat 10, adjacent to an outdoor living room with a fireplace.

In addition to the unparalleled views, this property features a professional kitchen, private office and an outdoor dining area in a screened porch with infrared heating to extend its use, and a built-in barbecue that can be used year round. The home’s kitchen features Wolf and SubZero appliances with Carrera marble countertops, a Wolf microwave and a wine refrigerator holding 48 bottles. A generous pantry off the kitchen provides plenty of storage for food, china, and more wine.

This home has been designed with entertaining in mind.  Central to the living area is a gorgeous 600 year old English refectory table which seats up to 12 people. A private office and media room featuring a large screen television is located off the main living area.

The east facing master suite is located on the main floor, with views of Sleeping Indian through wrap-around floor to ceiling windows, with battery powered window shades. It features a Bensen king bed with a Four Seasons mattress, a generous walk-in closet and private ensuite bathroom with a luxury shower and a Kaldewei bathtub.
The floors of this masterpiece are connected by a staircase heading to the lower level that is lined with books.  The lower level contains a one bedroom suite and an additional multi-purpose room featuring a a  standing desk, a sitting area with a Room and Board twin day bed, a Mirror by Lululemon and a murphy queen bed incorporated into a wall of shelving.

The Fish Creek Compound offers a separate guest house that provides lodging opportunities for multiple families traveling together or a private work space for a couple and family. This two bedroom guest offering comes equipped with a compact full kitchen and everything that one will need for their holiday vacation.

The guest house consists of a simple rectangle oriented on an east-west axis. The small dwelling and its outdoor decks are meant to provide an immersive experience for visitors, both visually and aurally. Through its siting near a stream that provides the sound of rushing water, and large windows that open the intimately scaled rooms to the outside, the small house creates the feeling of actually being in the woods. Cedar shingles and bonderized steel – galvanized steel processed through a phosphate bath – wrap the facades. Meanwhile, white oak was used for interior floors, doors and millwork. A disciplined use of materials gives cohesion to this small outbuilding.

Both houses benefit from passive solar heating, due to the large windows in the living areas and all houses on the property are powered by green power through Lower Valley Energy’s green power program.  The main house features a Level 2 EV charger, to be used if needed by the guests.
